Saint Mary Euphrasia

Zeal does not consist in continual preaching an inciting to virtue,
but is rather exercised by good example. Example makes much
more of an impression than words and often brings about really
astonishing results.
St. Mary Euphrasia
File:Mary Euphrasia Pelletier.jpgMary Euphrasia Pelletier was a French nun who started the Sister's of Charity of the Good Shepherd to help women prisoners in France. The order grew and came to the United States where many convents were once established to help adolescent girls.

I was at the convent from 1967-1970. I graduated high school in 1970 and was then released.

I would like to know if this site is about the Convent of the Good Shepherd/University Mount High School in San Francisco, CA.

If so, I would greatly appreciate any information/photos about the school, it's past history as well as what's happening with the school currently.

Also, if possible, I would like to know if there's any way I can get copies of the yearbooks as well as any way for me to contact the sisters that were there when and since I was there. Or at least to find out what's happening with them currently.

Thank you,

Barbara Sturgis (nee Kaplan)

I was also a resident of UMH. I was placed there in 1974 and graduated in 1975.

I would like to know what ever happened with the school and where all the sisters went.

This is my response to the above:

My name is Barbara and I graduated in 1970. I also would like to know what happened to them. Sister Consolata (Principal), Mother Christopher and Mother Madonna are the ones that come to mind.

My recollection is that they came to the Convent from New Orleans which is where they went to become nuns and learn what their calling was. But even if that is correct, after Katrina it may be difficult to track down the Good Shepherd Nuns.

I learned to play guitar while at the convent and we would travel to other area churches and play guitar masses. I lived there for 2 years and was released upon graduation. I got the best training I could get while there. I became a secretary and it was a great profession up until the computer age took over.

I can't find my yearbook....the one I helped put together before I left. And there are so many girls who I would really love to find. When I was there girls usually hung out with others who were from their same county. I came from Santa Clara County. But I made many friends that were from all over.

I would really like to talk to others who went there and hear their stories and bounce things off each other about our experiences. I've had a rough life but I'm okay. I'm 59, survived a lot of stuff. It's amazing I'm alive.

My name is Barbara Kaplan....at least that's my maiden name and the name I was known by at the convent.

I recently heard that the school is open and is run by a group that I am not familiar with. Just a school run by teachers and administrators. I don't know the name. I went by the convent thru the years when I'd go through SF and it always looked shut down and abandoned. I would absolutely LOVE to go back and walk through and see what it's like now. I can't imagine it would be too different. I mean that would be a MAJOR overall. All brick and those long, long marble hallways with the 3 chapels and all. 1 of my jobs was to run the buffer through the long breezeway. My other job was to clean the girl's chapel.

I'd enjoy hearing from others about their story. And if they'd be willing to connect in some way. I currently live in Vallejo, Ca. and I have a car so I'm mobile. Let me know.

I am directing this comment to LINDA MARIE PILLAY. I hope I have the correct name. You're the gal with the rifle in the photo. As well, you are a writer and at a time resided at the Convent of the Good Shepherd in SF.

It is VERY hard to figure out how to contact you. I have gone through pages and blogs and this is the only way I can try to connect with you.

Anyway, you seem to have had and still do have a very interesting and colorful life.

I am writing this to make contact with you if you are so inclined.

Also, I seem to have a problem with publishing my 'Comments' here in twos. I don't know why that happens but it is by accident and being a writer it may make you wonder if I am able to figure out even this small task.

Well, I don't seem to be able to. Maybe you can enlighten.

I do not want to impose nor do I want you to feel pressure.

I live in Vallejo, CA. I like fresh water fishing and I'm currently at several crossroads. My best friend (my only friend since 'regular' high school) lives in North Carolina and after 14 years I just recently reconnected with her.

That's it, that's all. I hope you are receptive to just see if maybe we could write or connect somehow.

Let me know.

I was at Good Shepherd/University Mount High School 1970 to 1972. Mother Christopher is the nun that interviewed me. She was also my "house mother." I learned to trust again through her, she taught me a lot but she sure had her hands full with me. I took the lock out of the upstairs back door and escaped over the wired wall, onto the greenhouse on the convent side and walked out. She took me back a few months later anyways. Any ideas on how to reconnect with some of the old crew could be kind of fun.
I learned to play guitar. I later went on to play classical guitar and was accept at the Conservatory of Music in SF. I also got some education while there since nothing outside of there worked for me. I returned to Santa Clara County and my wicked ways....
I'm about to turn 56, grandkids under foot, plenty of land around me, and going through some life changing events.
Anyone that was there and wants to connect I can be reached at krazycat1320@mail.com.

Sincerely,
Loretta Ward

I was at the convent from Oct 1970 to Mar 1972. My name is Debby Campbell. I lived in Mother Liguori's house, and she passed away while I was there. Then Mrs. Stalker became our house mother. I learned guitar there too. I went to the convent a couple of years ago and took photos. It sure is different now but the buildings are all still there. I'd love to contact the priests that visited. I remember Father Bush, but cannot remember the name of a younger priest that would visit - he is the one I'd like to see again. Made a difference in my life. I'm a little leary of contacting fellow conventees as I did so in the past and it did not turn out very well. But I'm up for emailing. Here is my contact info: debragc@gmail.com

Any chance that any of you that went to University Mound High School have record of, or remember, a John (or Sam) Allen that worked there in 1970? He took his own life in December of 1970, but I'm trying to find more information about him. Thanks!

I was there from 1974 to 75. I hated that place and it still gives me nightmares of the torture and abuse at that horrific place.

That's about the time I was there. I have as in a back cottage with Beth and Andy as house parents.
